About Zhuowen

Zhuowen Zhang is an artist based in China. Her work is involved with sculpture, installation, painting and video. Her work is contextually situated within her expanded practice of online publishing and exhibition making. Her prolific approach to making and cultural generation embraces continuous conceptual and technical experimentation to probe.
Zhuowen seeks works that convey profound concepts through simple forms. Art for her is a tool for expressing ideas. She is always experimenting with new media and new issues to express her views or to describe current situations and problems. Zhuowen’s practice is very strongly situated within research culture and her practice-based research is exciting and tenacious, focusing at present on the articulation of female experience within traditional patriarchal systems and art- as-advocacy for womens' rights. Zhuowen is exceptionally well read, and her published writings in the Chelsea Mafazine journal propose a quite provocative and serious approach to navigating codes of domesticity, class, and gender- based social expectations as an emergent territory of inquiry.
During her time on the MA Fine Art course, Zhuowen has been an exceptionally active and committed practitioner both at Chelsea and in professional contexts. She's participated in several exhibitions on campus, in China, and online, very often collaborating with practitioners from around the globe to contribute to exciting cross-disciplinary events.
